BFG – Space Marine Fleet Pics

Boarding Action

Boarding Action

Hi guys,

I recently finished painting up my Dark Angels Fleet to go with my Dark Angels Epic Army here. The fleet now sits at 1,500pts which is about half the size of the fleets I normally like to build. This is because I find the Space Marine fleet list rather boring, with only one battleship, one cruiser type, and three escort classes to pick from. This limits the variety you can do, and I am not really interested in just having loads of the same type of ship.

The fleet is made up of a single Battlebarge named the Angel of Retribution, three Strike Cruisers, the Salvation (with lance trade), and the Sword of Caliban and the Redemptor, both with the additional shield upgrade. Supporting these are four each of the Nova, Gladius, and Hunter class escorts.

You may have noticed that these escort models are not the GW originals. Sadly Marines are still quite popular, probably because of their 40k popularity, and this makes the GW-originals more expensive than I am will to pay for. You may have noticed, that I am incredibly stingy ūüėõ

Instead, I decided to use some Ground Zero Games miniatures again, exactly like I did for my Tyranid fleet here. The models here are the from the Neu Swabian League range available here. I think their blocky shape fits in well with the Space Marine aesthetic and with the same colour scheme I think they work quite well at a fraction of the price.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading that and please leave a comment if you want.

Thanks!

BFG: Dark Angels Battle Barge

Hi guys,

Another follow-up post on the recently re-painted Space Marine fleet I have been putting together. The last post had the three Strike Cruisers in it, while this is for the one Battle Barge that forms the core of the fleet. Again re-painted in the same dark gray scheme, with little hints of dark green and cream.

I have put the fuller fleet pictures up on the top line of the blog, and kept the previous Ultramarine pics up there too.

BFG: Re-painted Dark Angels Strike Cruisers

Hi guys,

Quick filler post as I am off to London for a bit tomorrow, with some Strike Cruiser I have recently re-painted to fit in with my EPIC Dark Angels army. These were originally painted quite bright blue as an Ultramarines fleet but have had a bit of a tone down and become the BFG fleet of my Dark Angels army. I went for a more utilitarian gray colour scheme with only the odd speck of dark green / cream / ice blue to perk things up.

The fleet is now bang-on a thousand points, with a Battle Barge still to be shown here.

MWIH – My Week in Hobby 2

Hi guys,

Welcome to the second post in this series, slightly less full than last week!

This week, on Wednesday, I played another game of Mighty Empire as a board game against two of my friends, Mike and Tom. It well well, although some issues cropped up with the way in which the realms are rolled up at the beginning of the game which put one player (me) at a severe disadvantage. Still the game played well with three players and it opened up some interesting avenues for further exploration.

Then on Saturday, I played a fun game of 40k versus my friend Ben. He is just getting back into using his 40k Thousand Sons, so we paired off his marines against a Witchhunter Inquisitor army. Just in case anyone is interested my 1500pt list was: Inquisitor Lord w/ CC retinue in a Rhino, Inquisitor w/ HBolter Servitor retinue, 5 x Death Cult Assassins, a Callidus Assassin, two units of 10 Stormtroopers with Plasma guns in Rhinos, two units of 5 Stormtroopers (one with 2 x Melta, one with 2 x Flamer), a Penitent Engine, and a mob of 18 Zealots with 3 Eviscerator Fanatics in it.

Last but not least, I have finally finished a formation of my EPIC Dark Angels army (that I started painting before the summer…) completing four stands of Assault Marines with a Chaplain character. The wash was still slightly wet when the photos were taken, and check out the difference in quality/size between the marines and the GW Chaplain model!

¬£100 Armies – The Rest

Well the last few days have been a little crazy, with 5000+ hits on the blog in two days as Specialist Games went under, and some very bad food poisoning at my end.

Prior to hearing the news, I had dug up some more 3000pt Epic lists for less than £100 (£150 buying new), and it seems like a shame to let them go to waste so I am going to pop them all into one blog post and leave them up on the web to serve as decent beginner lists for anyone thinking of starting Epic to come across. Plus, you should be able to pick most of this stuff up on ebay!

Space Marines

TACTICAL DETACHMENT [400] 6 Tacticals, 3 Rhinos, Supreme Commander

TACTICAL DETACHMENT [350] 6 Tacticals, 3 Rhinos, Captain

ASSAULT DETACHMENT [225] 4 Assault units, Chaplain

DEVASTATOR DETACHMENT [300] 4 Devastators, Librarian

WHIRLWINDS [300] 4 Whirlwinds

TERMINATOR DETACHMENT [375] 4 Terminators, Captain

TERMINATOR DETACHMENT [325] 4 Terminators

THUNDERHAWK [200]

£67.40 (SM Coy Box, Rhino Box, Characters, Whirlwinds, Terminators, Thunderhawk)

Strong infantry presence, and air assault from Termies or Assault / Devastators in the Thunderhawk, while the Whirlwinds and Tacticals give you good mid-field control. It is a little weak in long ranged firepower, and lacks AA completely.

Eldar

Eldar

ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [600] 8 Dire Avenger, 4 Wave Serpent, Autarch, Exarch

GUARDIAN WARHOST [300] Farseer, 7 Guardians, 3 Wraithguard

WINDRIDER TROUPE [200] 6 Jetbike

RANGER TROUPE [150] 6 Ranger

NIGHTWINGS [300] 3 Nightwing Interceptors

ENGINES OF VAUL TROUPE [250] Void Spinner

ENGINES OF VAUL TROUPE [250] Void Spinner

GUARDIAN WARHOST [150] Farseer, 4 Guardians, 3 Heavy Weapon Platform

REVENANT TITANS [650] 2 Revenant Titans

GUARDIAN WARHOST [150] Farseer, 4 Guardians, 3 Heavy Weapon Platform

£109.30 (Warhost Box, Nightwings, 2 x void Spinners, Weapon Platforms, Revenants)

Eldar are quite expensive! The Aspects in Wave Serpents are fearsome, as are the Revenants in this size of list, while the Void Spinners and Rangers can effectively hold the backfield. Although the Guardians are quite delicate, once they are in decent area cover they will be decidedly hard to shift off an objective, while providing a little supporting fire. Nightwings give excellent AA and AT power to the list.

REGIMENTAL HQ [500] Supreme Commander, 12 Infantry, 7 Chimera

THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150] 2 Thunderbolts

SUPER-HEAVY TANK COMPANY [500] 3 Shadowsword

SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] 4 Sentinels

SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] 4 Sentinels

ROUGH RIDER PLATOON [150] 6 Rough Riders

£108.40 GW (Infantry Coy, 2 x Chimera, Rough Riders, Sentinels, Hydras, 2 x Thunderbolts)

£35.84 FW (2 x Medusa, 3 x Shadowswords)

Bit of a strange IG list, with a lot of light formations like the Rough Riders and Sentinels. These are needed to counterweight the pricey SHT Company and Mechanized Companies, and to screen them from unwanted attention. The Hydras provide a strong AA component, leaving the Thunderbolts free to be aggressive in targeting enemy formations.

KULT OF SPEED [200] 6 Buggy, 2 Skorcha

BLITZ BRIGADE [150] 4 Deth Kopta

BLITZ BRIGADE [150] 4 Deth Kopta

FIGHTA SQUADRON [150] 3 Fighta Bomba

£104.30 (Ork Horde, Big Gunz, Soopa Gunz, Landa, 2 x Kult, Deth Koptas, Fighta Bommas)

While the two Big Warbands and Big Gun formations can hold / move onto objectives, the two small Kults and the Deth Coptas give more activations as well as speed to the army. The Landa poses a double threat – an air assault with the Boyz, or just a number of decent strafing runs, while the FB’s should help you attain air superiority so that the Landa doesn’t get shot down!

Titan Legion

Titan Legion

WARHOUND TITAN [275] Plasma Blastgun, Vulcan Megabolter

WARHOUND TITAN [275] Vulcan Megabolter, Plasma Blastgun

REAVER TITAN [775] 3 Laser Blaster, Veteran Princeps, Single Weapon System Surcharge

REAVER TITAN [675] 3 Apocalypse Rocket Launcher, Veteran Princeps

REAVER TITAN [850] 3 Laser Blaster, Legate, Carapace Multi-Lasers, Single Weapon System Surcharge

THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150] 2 Thunderbolts

£95.5 (2 x Warhound, Thunderbolts, 3 x Reaver)

Slightly different list, and not one I would recommend for a beginner to Epic. In 3000pts, 3 Reavers are exceptionally scary and I would recommend arming them like the above so they can concentrate on roles rather than not being very efficient. 18 x AT3+ will put a big dent in any formation you are likely to see at this points level, while the Warhounds and Thunderbolts provide speed and long range.

Looking forward to 2013…

Having gotten the reminiscing out of the way, here is what I plan to get done in the next 9-12 months.

Eldar

Eldar

Blog wise:

1) Finally get pictures of my EPIC Chaos Marines and Eldar up on the blog. They have featured in battle reports, but still do not have good pictures of them up here.

2) Get full army / fleet pictures up for any armies that do not have them.

3) Post up about the 7,500pts Titan Legion and 7,000pts Daemon World armies I have recently painted but not yet posted.

4) Do more Daemon World playtesting / battle reports.

BFG bits and pieces

BFG bits and pieces

Painting wise:

1) Paint the 3,000pts of Imperial BFG I still have to do. Currently sprayed Dark Green.

2) Paint the 5,500pts of EPIC E&C Marines I have as Dark Angels.

3) Strip and re-paint the BFG Space Marine fleet to match.

4) Paint 30 WHFB Greatswords to finish off my Empire army.

5) Finish off remaining BFG ships – Rogue Traders bits and pieces, Spacefleet based Inquisitorial Fleet etc.

Steel Legion

Steel Legion

Hobby-wise:

1) Convert Cultists into stand-in Heavies for Necromunda

2) Buy a 40k army (shock! horror!) – currently negotiating for a Steel Legion guard army

3) Possibly buy an Escher gang – got to love those Jes Goodwin sculpts!

Let me know in the comments section what your plans for this year are, what you got for Christmas, what you want the blog to cover etc!
