MWIH – My week in Hobby 6

Hi again guys,

I hope everyone is well, and getting the most out of the hobby!

Sadly, the rules for this game are quite tricky to get hold of these days

Sadly, the rules for this game are quite tricky to get hold of these days

This week, I played in another multi-player game of Legends of the Old West, a GW historicals game dealing with the Wild West, the US-Mexico Wars, the Indian Wars etc. Overall a good game with interesting movement and shooting possibilities, sadly let down by an abysmal combat system. I had a terrible game last month, and lost two of the four members of my US Cavalry posse, so my involvement in the game this month was limited to taking a couple of pot shots at the rapidly escaping bad guys.

I have yet to roll up the advancements / results from the game, but hopefully I should earn enough dollars to hire another couple of troopers and get me back up to four models!

In other news I have painted up some more of my Dark Angels (are you as sick of them as I am yet?) now completing another Tactical Marine formation which gives me a full company worth of marines. These guys are armed with a mix of Missile Launchers and Special Weapons  – one Melta Gun, one Plasma Gun, and one Flamer.

Otherwise, my local club is starting up a kill team campaign thing this week and I am taking my Sisters of Battle along for the ride. Hoping that the combination of a bunch of Melta and Flamer toting Dominions in an Immolator will prove fearsome enough to carry me through.

I still have the command stand for the Dark Angels company to paint up, which will happen soon, and I might have a crack at starting on some of the vehicles / bikes in the army in the next week or so.

I hope everyone is well and that their gaming is plentiful,

Gus

MWIH – My Week in Hobby 1

Hi guys,

I have decided, in order to keep you up to date with things, to start doing a ‘My Week in Hobby’ every week or so to chart the many things I get up to which never make it onto the blog.

This week I have:

Wednesday: Played a throw-down Warhammer Fantasy game against my friend Tom’s Warriors of Chaos with my Empire – no lists, just rough totals, and the watch tower scenario made it interesting. Good for refreshing the rules, especially given his unit of six(!) characters.

Friday: Played Legends of the Old West – a scenario I wrote involving six posses, with the good guys having to try and escort two carts through the town to the sheriffs office while the bad guys tried to stop them. Game ended with three of my cavalry men punched off their horses (Legends combat sucks 😦 ) and one cart each. We are currently playing in a loosely linked campaign format so the next scenario will follow on the narrative form this one.

Sunday: Played a giant Warhammer Fantasy game with some friends of mine – Lizardmen, Empire, and Wood Elves vs. Vampire Counts and Warriors of Chaos. About 8-9k a side, playing the Fortitude victory conditions made for a really great game. The good guys won after a couple of lucky combats went our way.

Saturday: My friend Ben, from Forgot My Tea, came over and we tried out Mighty Empires, playing it as a board game (i.e without battles) for a while. It seemed to work quite well, lots of ups and downs, though I think we needs to get a better handle on how banners and battles interact. I have also been playing around with the tiles in my evenings, building maps etc.

Otherwise, I haven’t been up to much hobby wise. Thesis work is ramping up crazily at the moment, but I am off to the local gaming club tonight to play Mighty Empires again with my friend Mike.

Oh and the blog just clicked over 30,000 all time views – thanks for visiting guys!

Hope you are all having good hobby-times,

Gus

Looking back on 2013

This blog has been running for almost two years now, which I far longer than I had hoped for it to last. This year has been pretty tumultuous, both in the mini-wargaming world, and in terms of my “real” work.

A quick run down of the hobby happenings of this past year on here:

The biggest thing to happen was the breaking of the news of Specialist Games, both GW and FW, being pulled – which saw my blog stats go completely mental with 3000+ views per day. Luckily the withdrawal, apart from sending eBay BFG prices skyrocketing, has not had too much of an impact on my hobby or the hobby generally. With new manufacturers like Exodus Wars, Troublemaker Games, and DRM, the loss of GW stuff has not been too big of a blow.

I have managed to finish painting:

Gothic Imperial Navy Fleet

A 3,000pt Imperial Navy fleet using the Gothic Sector list.

Titans

A 7,500pt EPIC Titan Legions – This still needs tarting up with fancier bases, detail painting, and legion banners. Plus I have an Emperor Titan to add to the force.

A small Legends of the Old West Cavalry Posse.

Some of my WiP Epic Dark Angels

I have also begun painting my EPIC Dark Angels, which I now have undercoated and base coloured.

Slightly less done than last year, but I think that is excusable given the work circumstance!

Steel Legion

On the non-painting side of the hobby things have been a little different – the main thing being that I have gotten in 40k in a big way, collecting essentially three armies – Steel Legion, Sisters of Battle, and an Inquisition force – each of around 3,000pts.

I have also played my first ever game of Space Hulk, and picked up the amount of BFG, Necromunda, and Inquisimunda I have been playing. Sadly this means that Warhammer Fantasy and EPIC have taken a bit of a back seat, but I have still managed to get in a game or two.

Modelling wise, things have been relatively slow as well.

I have finished putting together a Bastion Imperial Navy Fleet (2,500pts) and a Chaos Maelstrom Fleet (1,500pts), but both now need painting etc.

Legends of the Old West – US Cavalry Posse

Hi guys,

My new posse

My new posse

I have recently gotten into yet another game system at the instigation of some friends, the old GW game system call Legends of the Old West. Set in a half-fiction Wild West world, it revolves around skirmish fights between differing gangs. In one of the expansions, players can choose to make up their gangs from the US cavalry or from Native Americans. I choose to do a US cavalry posse using the Artizan figures. Apologies for how weird the pictures have come out, I really don’t have access to a decent place to take photos, nor enough light it seems. The starting posse is made of three heroes, a lieutenant and two sergeant, and one recruit. $200 really does not go far when every trooper is mounted!

The blog will be returning to some Epic Lost and the Damned tactica and possibly some BFG bits and pieces in the near future, but for now, here are the pictures!
