EPIC Soulgrinder Conversions

Hi guys,

If any of you follow me on Twitter (@NovRain3946) you may have already seen this photo. If you don’t follow me, then you totally should. There tend to be alot more WiP pictures up there and it will let you know whenever I have posted a new thing up here. Plus there is a whole wide warhammery world out there to explore.

My EPIC Soulgrinders

My EPIC Soulgrinders

On topic – As some may know, I am in charge of the development of a Daemon World list for the NetEA project, the fan update / rules to maintain Epic Armageddon. As part of this, we have the Ghallamore Incursion list, representing a large scale daemonic incursion that occurs in the in the 41st millennium which is available here. Soulgrinders are quite important in the context of the list, offering speed and assault power.

40k Soulgrinder

40k Soulgrinder

One of the formation available to this list are Soulgrinders, an unholy fusion of daemon and machine based off a (rather nice, I think) 40k model. Now while I like the Soulgrinder model, I prefer the theme / look of the Forgeworld Plague Hulk and wanted to try and copy that kind of thing a little more for my EPIC versions.

Plague Hulk

Plague Hulk

So for my attempt I decided to mash together one of the small old style Nurglings with a multilegged robot body. Sawing through the body of some of the bigger Nurglings was a bit of a challenge but I am quite happy with how they have turned out so far. They still need greenstuffing to fill gaps and meld the two halves together a bit better. I do quite like the contrast between the smooth sleek bodies and the rotten Nurgle flesh so may just wash the metallic rather heavily in green / brown. For now, they go back in the case and I am concentrating on painting other things.

EPIC: Ghallamore Cleansing Daemon Incursion List

Mmmm daemon-ey!

Mmmm daemon-ey!

Hi guys,

Just a quick post – I have recently updated the NetEA list I have been working on, the Ghallamore Cleansing Daemon Incursion list. It aims to represent an EPIC army composed entirely of Daemons, without relying on Chaos Space Marines, Cultists, or Daemon Engines. It is still a long way from balanced or finished, but please have a read and let me know what you think.

EPIC – The rest of the Daemons

Right, this is the last of the posts about my recently painted EPIC Daemon army bringing together all of the formations not yet covered. These are mix of some of the slightly weirder formations, both god-aligned and undivided formations.

7 Beasts of Nurgle

7 Beasts of Nurgle

First up, are seven Beasts of Nurgle using the odl metal models. They are quite nice models and in game they give a formidably resilient formation to the army. They have a 3+ armour save and an Invulnerable which gives them a good chance of shrugging off anything apart from MW firepower. I quite like teleporting these in to either threaten the enemy’s Blitz, or using their Ignore Cover attacks to drive formations out of cover.

16 Juggernauts of Khorne

16 Juggernauts of Khorne

Although expensive at 50 points a pop, Juggernauts are defintiely a force to be reckoned with. Sporting a 3+ Armour Save, a 3+ MW attack in close combat, and effectively a 40cm charge move – Juggernauts can threaten just about any enemy formation. Still they are quite slow when not on the engage and are poor in firefight, so they do have thier drawbacks.

10 Chaos Spawn

10 Chaos Spawn

Next up are a couple of the Unidivided formations available to the army, Spawn and Furies. The Spawn above are from Dark Realm Miniatures – Claw Beasts – and fit quite well into the imagery of Slaaneshi spawn. In game, they are hampered by their slow speed and lack of firefight, but when they do reach combat their D3+1 attacks each can prove surprisingly good!

12 Furies

12 Furies

Although at first glace the Furies seem to be quite rubbish, I honestly think they are the most critical formation in the list. They are the only place apart from the Chaos Altars where the list can get AA (even if it is only a 6+), they are very fast at 30cm and Jump Packs, and give the list access to very cheap Scout formations. If you look back in the blog you can see how useful they were to me in my game against my friend Ben – Turn 1, Turn 2 & Turn 3 – allowing me to force him to move his artillery and speeding up to threaten his Blitz. The models are the Guula Beasts, again from Dark Realm Miniatures.

My unpainted shame

My unpainted shame

Lastly, a picture of the models I still need to paint up for this army –  12 Screamers of Tzeentch, 3 stands of Seekers of Slaanesh, a Tzeentch Daemon Prince, a Knight Titan I plan to use as a Subjugator titan for the Lost and the Damned list and the Warmaster Lord of Change. Once everything is done the army should be a bit over 7,000pts, and reasonably future-proof in terms of list development.

——————————–

Next up is my most recent Battlefleet Gothic Fleet – an Imperial fleet in dark green, cream and bronze. I am quite happy with the fleet and should have pics going up in the near future.

EPIC – Altar-phants, Hellfires, Hounds and Big Mutants

Third part of my newly-painted EPIC army is now up.

3 Altar Elephants

3 Altar Elephants

First up are the three Warmaster Elephants from right at the beginning of the blog – newly painted in three different colours. I now have the top pieces of each of the gods, although the Tzeentch and Slaaneshi ones are a little larger – fitting given most of the army os Tzeentch / Slaanesh.

4 Chaos Hounds

4 Chaos Hounds

These are four stands of Chaos Hounds – again made form the Warmaster models. This does make them a little big scale-wise, but there are not very appropriate sized proxies else where.

15 Big Mutants

15 Big Mutants

Next up are some Big Mutants – made from the old Chaos Minotaurs and Trolls on the old Chaos Horde sprue. They are very useful in game, giving the cultist to which they are attached a much better armour save as well as decent firefight (3+). I like to add a stand or two to most of my covens, just to make them a little bit more a threat than they are with just cultists.

Hellfire Cannons

Hellfire Cannons

Last up in this post are my Hellfire Cannons. I am really liking these at the moment as they are cheap and provide some badly lacking long-range anti-AT / MW firepower. Plus, they can garrison which I consistently fail to remember! The models are the old Squat Thudd guns, with Chaos Squat crew members.

EPIC – Slaaneshi Daemons

Next up are the various Slaaneshi formations that are in the army – Daemonettes, Fiends, Seekers and Seeker Chariots.

7 Daemonettes

7 Daemonettes

Seven stands of Daemonettes form the Slaaneshi lesser daemons for the daemon army. Unfortunately I need a couple of more stands to allow me to field all the Slaaneshi support formations.

10 Fiends of Slaanesh

10 Fiends of Slaanesh

These are some Dark Realm models – Malcore Beasts – but I think they work quite convincingly as Fiends of Slaanesh given their multiple legs and pincer claws. In game they are relatively speedy (20cm and Infiltrator) and provide a good armour save and good close combat to formations.

13 Seekers of Slaanesh

13 Seekers of Slaanesh

Next up are some of the very old, very out-of-scale, Seekers of Slaanesh. Luckily when it comes to EPIC scale is not terribly important, and I can’t imagine anyone will complain if my daemons of the warp are slightly too large!

8 partially done Seeker Chariots

8 partially done Seeker Chariots

Last up are some partially done Seeker Chariots. These were recently released for WHFB and 40k, and I have decided to incorporate them into the EPIC Daemon World list as very light and very fast vehicles. I hope to eventually get around to building little chariots to attach to the Seeker models, but for now they are just staying as they are.

EPIC – Lesser Daemons

Hi again guys,

Next up are the lesser daemons for Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeentch for this army. Each gets formed into a Daemonic Horde of between 6 – 12 stands with a Herald character, and then can have a variety of upgrades. Plus, having these daemons painted up means I can use them as normal lesser daemons for my Lost and the Damned or Chaos space Marine armies.

13 Plaguebearers

13 Plaguebearers

Plaguebearers are excellent in EPIC, especially in the original rules where they were heavily armoured, good in CC, and pretty good in FF too. Still, since their downgrade (the FF got dropped to a 6+) they are still excellent at beefing up a cultist mob or providing the Daemon World list with a solid defensive formation, especially when upgraded with a Chaos Altar for AA and some 4+ Reinforced Armour.

8 Bloodletters

8 Bloodletters

7 Flesh Hounds

7 Flesh Hounds

Next up are the Khornate daemons – Bloodletters and Flesh Hounds. Both are heavily combat focused which makes them a little less useful than the mixed role Plaguebearers and the FF orientated Tzeentch daemons, however the Flesh Hounds do give a chaotic player a very sneak trick. Choosing to summon them instead of Bloodletters on a Khorne aligned formation allows for a truly gigantic engage move of 40cm. The Flesh Hounds 20cm base move is doubled as they have the Infiltrator special rule, meaning that the player can often surprise their opponent with a long engage.

12 Horrors

12 Horrors

12 Flamers

12 Flamers

Last up in this post are the Tzeentch Daemons – Horrors and Flamers. Normally most of my Lost and the Damned lists are Tzeentch aligned as I like the fluff and enjoy the firefight punch they provide to the Cultists and Mutants which make up most of the list. Flamers are especially nasty with 2 x 4+ FF attacks each, which is part of the reason Horrors are the core Tzeentch daemon in the Daemon World list!

New 40k Army

New 40k Army

In other news, I have recently finished the second last chapter of my thesis, started running a Fantasy Mighty Empires Campaign for my local club, and bought a 3,000-ish point Steel Legion 40k army.

EPIC – Daemon Characters

Hi guys,

I am back from Belgium now, so blog posts should hopefully pick up again now I am back with all of my models. I played a game today against my friend Ben (Forgot My Tea) using the EPIC UK lists, my Lost and the Damned versus his Thousand Sons. 3,000 points, ending in a 3-1 victory to the Lost and the Damned. Some oddities to the lists though – no hellhounds available to the Lost and the Damned and Supreme Commander only available to Terminators in the Thousand Sons list.

Painting-wise, I am waiting for the cold / wet weather we have been having to clear so I can get on with spraying my EPIC Space Marines green, while converting a couple of Heavy models for Necromunda from Chaos cultists.

Still, the point of this post is to be the first in a series of posts on my recently painted EPIC Daemon army, built for the Deamon World list I am supposed to be developing.  First up, are the character models which make up the Daemon Princes in the army. All of the models come from the respective Warmaster Character packs, and although they are 10mm models given they are supposed to be Daemon Princes the difference scale is not something to worry about.

Nurgle Daemon Prince

Nurgle Daemon Prince

Nurgle Daemon Prince

Nurgle Daemon Prince

These are two Nurgle Daemon Princes. I am espcially pleased with the way the cream coloured robes have turned out on the second model and it is probably my favourite model in the entire army. The top model occasionally gets used as a Great Unclean One (as I think he is supposed to be in Warmaster) although he is a little small for a 4 DC model.

Khorne Daemon Prince / Bloodthirster

Khorne Daemon Prince / Bloodthirster

Khorne Champion on Juggernaut

Khorne Champion on Juggernaut

Another 2 Daemon Princes, with one occasionally standing in for a Bloodthirster when needed. I quite the like the effect the Red Ink has given on the second models armour – nice and blood-splattered, and it provides a good contrast to the brass Juggernaut.

Tzeentch Daemon Prince

Tzeentch Daemon Prince

Last but not least, is my Tzeentch Daemon Prince. I have the Lord of Change model from Warmaster for this, which is quite sizeable but unpainted, so usually this model just stays as a lowly Daemon Prince.

Looking forward to 2013…

Having gotten the reminiscing out of the way, here is what I plan to get done in the next 9-12 months.

Eldar

Eldar

Blog wise:

1) Finally get pictures of my EPIC Chaos Marines and Eldar up on the blog. They have featured in battle reports, but still do not have good pictures of them up here.

2) Get full army / fleet pictures up for any armies that do not have them.

3) Post up about the 7,500pts Titan Legion and 7,000pts Daemon World armies I have recently painted but not yet posted.

4) Do more Daemon World playtesting / battle reports.

BFG bits and pieces

BFG bits and pieces

Painting wise:

1) Paint the 3,000pts of Imperial BFG I still have to do. Currently sprayed Dark Green.

2) Paint the 5,500pts of EPIC E&C Marines I have as Dark Angels.

3) Strip and re-paint the BFG Space Marine fleet to match.

4) Paint 30 WHFB Greatswords to finish off my Empire army.

5) Finish off remaining BFG ships – Rogue Traders bits and pieces, Spacefleet based Inquisitorial Fleet etc.

Steel Legion

Steel Legion

Hobby-wise:

1) Convert Cultists into stand-in Heavies for Necromunda

2) Buy a 40k army (shock! horror!) – currently negotiating for a Steel Legion guard army

3) Possibly buy an Escher gang – got to love those Jes Goodwin sculpts!

Let me know in the comments section what your plans for this year are, what you got for Christmas, what you want the blog to cover etc!
