BFG – Rogue Traders vs. Imperial Fleet

Rogue-Trader-Crew

Hi guys,

Sorry it has been so long since the last post – I haven’t been gaming much and life has been rather busy to be honest. Still, I am back with a bumper post detailing a game of BFG I recently had with Andy from Miniature Miscellany. He is currently painting down at GW HQ and doing some really nice Age of Sigmar Chaos models, so go have a look.

——————————–

The game was just a quickie, with small fleets, using the Convoy scenario as that seemed pretty thematic for the fleets we had chosen to play. Andy was using his Imperials, while I had chosen to bring out my Rogue Trader fleet. They are great for small games, with lots of choice, and work thematically for a number of the scenarios.

We set up the board with a scattering of asteroids and a planet (we were only using¬† 4′ x 4′) and we were off.

IMG_2212

My fleet consisted of a pair of Dauntless Light Cruisers (both with Lances) and a squadron of Cobra escorts. Along with these I had my convoy, six regular transports and one heavy transport ship. I moved cautiously onto the table, warhips taking the lead.

IMG_2213In response, Andy moved one of his Dauntlesses forward, screened by his own Cobras.

IMG_2215
I loosed some shots, successfully blowing a few of Andy’s escorts up, while moving up with the rest of the fleet.

IMG_2217

Andy had a much better turn than me. He swung the Dauntless to the side, opening up his broadsides and targetting my Dauntlss. Firing his Cobra’s torpedoes, he struck home on my Cobras, destroying three, and also managed to damage my othr Dauntless.

IMG_2220

My return fire bouyed me up a littel – both Dauntlesses fired their lances at the Imperial Navy cruiser, striking home and knocking two DC off it. Lots of blast markes litter the starscape as the convoy surges forward.

IMG_2222

Andy responds by flipping over some of his other contact markers, revealing some Firestorm Frigates and another Dauntless which move forward into engagement range.

IMG_2224

Andy shifts forward, badly damaging my Dauntless, and closing in on the transport ships.

IMG_2227

My fleet gets congested trying to avoid the asteroid field, pincered by Andy’s oncoming fleet, and the perfect target for some torpedoes! Them combined with th fire from the ships knocks out the first transport and puts damage on pretty much every ship I have.

IMG_2229

In response, I curl one Dauntless around the back of the Imperial fleet, hoping to chase down the damaged cruiser and bracket the other vessels.

IMG_2231Andy pushes through my fleet, splitting the convoy, and laying down blast markers. His damaged dauntless cannot turn and drifts onwards.

IMG_2232

Andy’s damaged Dauntless finally bites the dust, but his Firestorms make short work of some of my transports. I cant turn fast enough to defend them and I can feel the game slipping away from me.

IMG_2233

Andy sneaks off a few more transports , and with both my Dauntlesses quite damaged, ekes out a win!

I hope you guys enjoyed that game report. We played another game and I have pics from it, so they should make their way up here eventually.

Thanks guys ūüôā

Apocalypse Class Battleships

Apocalypse Class Battleships

Hi guys,

Last post of the ships that make up my newly painted Bastion fleet, this time a pair of Apocalypse Class Battleships, the Zurishaddai and the Ammishaddai. Both are very rare models now, and regularly go for stupid amounts on eBay, but I managed to snap up both of these for less then the original selling price.

The Zurishaddai

The Zurishaddai

The Ammishaddai

The Ammishaddai

“The Apocalypse class is an ancient design that is generally believed to have been the precursor of the Retribution class battleship millennia ago. The superior technologies used to construct the multiple lance turrets on the Apocalypse have now all but been forgotten and so the small number of examples of this ship can never be replaced.”

The Apocalypse is a particularly cool battleship with its fearsome lance batteries and distinctive prow, but is a little lacking in game. It has 6 lances on either side which is great, but even then the ship will struggle to knock down the shields on a regular cruiser. It really needs another ship to have knocked down the targets shields first and really benefits from the Lock-On special order which boosts its range from 30cm to 60cm for the cost of a blast marker.

Luckily in the Bastion fleet list I am planning pairing up a Vengeance Grand Cruiser and an Apocalypse Class Battleship seems to offer a good mix of 60cm weapons batteries and 60cm lances which should make it possible to talk about damaging / crippling important enemy ships from the first turn.

That brings this fleet series to an end, with only a few more all fleet pictures left to post up. I will add all of these to a page tab up at the top of the blog like I usually do, and please leave me a comment / feedback.

Thanks

Vengeance Class Grand Cruisers

Vengeance Class Grand Cruisers

Hi guys,

Next up are a pair of Vengeance Class Grand Cruisers, a steady old workhorse of the Imperial fleet that draws on both Imperial and Chaos fleet aesthetics to create what I think is a really nice model. I particularly like the broad, flat, heavy prow and the two bridges.

The Aminadab

The Aminadab

The Elishama

Unfortunately the Grand Cruiser model is now rather rare, being limited to eBay sellers, which is disappointing as it forms quite a key selling point of the Bastion Fleet list and has alot of variants that really add to the number of choices available to an Imperial / Chaos admiral. Still there are a variety of ways around that, including magnetising the ships you have (these are not, but could easily be made so) or conversions such as this rather good one on the Specialist Arms forum (also rather good for BFG and Warmaster, but covering all of the Specialist Games).

Prow shot

I also rather like the Vengeance in game terms as it provides long range fire power to the Imperial fleet (FP10 WB @ 60cm and 2 lances @ 45cm per side) while being rather sturdy. Although lacking the 6+ armoured prow of most Imperial cruisers, I feel its range and extra shield makes up for this quite well. Plus when your guns and Left/Right, you are likely to be abeam anyway.

Gothic Class Cruisers

Gothic Class Cruisers

Hi guys,

Last set of pictures of the (boring) cruisers for this fleet I promise. This time it the pair of Gothic class cruisers in the list, the Issachar and the Zuar, that are in the spotlight. As anyone that has played me at BFG will know, I love my Gothic Class Cruisers! While they do get some flack from being solely lance-boats and rather vulnerable in a prolonged fight with another similar sized ship, I love the ability to have them deliver the killing blow to the enemy after their shields have been knocked down. Any opportunity to lock on with these beauties is always seized!

Prow and Lance turrets

Prow and Lance turrets

That brings us to the end of the cruiser class ships in the fleet with a nice round mix – 2 Gothics, 2 Tyrants, 2 Dictators, and 3 Light Cruisers. This gives me a fairly heavy ordnance presence with 10 launch bays, 2 Nova Cannons, and a spread of torpedoes. I kind of need this number of launch bays as none of the larger ships offer any.

Dominator Class Cruisers

Tyrant Class Cruisers

Hi guys,

This post features the pair of Tyrant class cruisers in the list – both given additional the weapons battery upgrade and replacing their torpedoes with Nova Cannons. This makes them rather fearsome, but also rather expensive. They sport FP10 45cm Weapons Batteries on the side which is pretty nice for an Imperial ship. The reason I have had to do this is because the Bastion fleet list does not include the more regular Dominator class cruiser.

Colour scheme should be fairly obvious by now – gray spraypaint, lighter gray drybrush, dark red prows, gold detailing. This sets it apart from all my other fleets as a much lighter scheme while still being relatively neutral.

Two Dictator Class Cruisers

Two Dictator Class Cruisers

Hi guys,

Second fleet pic post up now. This time it is two of the Dictator Class Cruisers that form the bedrock to most Imperial Fleets you come across, especially those not large enough to field a Battleship (which is ALWAYS an Emperor class… *yawn*). The necessity of ordnance (bombers and fighters) in BFG really irritates me sometimes as it constrains the realistic ship selection for small games. Although the Escort Carrier does exist, and the Bakka fleet list helps a little, it still seems a point of poor game / list design that the Dictator is such a required choice.

Sorry to bitch ūüėõ

Note the mangozac prows which bring the cruisers in line with the Voss pattern of prows such as the ones found on the (rare now) Apocalypse Class Battleship and the (always rarer than hen’s teeth) Voss pattern light cruisers from GW. The whole point of this fleet was to have a top heavy and Voss pattern fleet in contrast to my Gothic sector fleet.

Light Cruisers - bought from a guy on Warseer

Light Cruisers – bought from a guy on Warseer

Hi Guys,

First set of detailed Bastion pictures. This set deals with the three light cruisers that are part of the list; the Pedahzur, the Ahiezer, and the Pagiel. All of these models were bought from a guy on Warseer who scratch-built a conversion and then cast them in resin. They were quite nice casts, but are sadly now out of production. They came without weapons panels, so I was free to assemble them into what I felt was the best / most fluffy combination of a single Defiant and two Endeavours. The weapons panels are only blutac-ed on, so I could change them if necessary.

BFG – Bastion Fleet Pics

Bastion Fleet

Bastion Fleet

Hi guys

You may have remembered me talking about putting together a Bastion fleet a while ago, a specific type of Imperial fleet that is based around defending the Eye of Terror, here and here. Well, I have finally finished painting them and gotten round to taking some picture for you all.

Untitled

“Battlefleeets Cadia, Agripinaa, Scarus and Corona, in particular, are collectively known as the Bastion Fleets. These fleets are given over to guarding the region of space around the Eye of Terror, or the Sectors Ocular as these¬† bordering regions are sometimes known. By their very nature, the Bastion Fleets are some of the most extensive and best equipped battlefleets of the Imperium, forced to exist in a state of near perpetual warfare against the frequent¬† raiders from the Eye of Terror. More rarely, these battlefleets are forced to assemble into vast armadas and repel the amassed threat of a Black Crusade, and to this end maintain substantial reserve fleets ready for action when
the existing Navy are.”

This fleet is rather special as it contains some now quite rare ships like the Apocalypse Class Battleship and Vengeance Class Grand Cruiser, while also using some of the very nice MangoZac Prows. The full fleet list is as follows:

Admiral Ld9, 2 x RR                      175

BFG – Hawking Class Exploration Cruisers

Hawking Class Exploration Cruisers

Hawking Class Exploration Cruisers

Hi guys,

Another quick BFG post, this time of two Hawking Class Exploration cruisers.

“The Hawking Class dates from the time of the legendary crusades of Lord Solar Macharius. The original Hawking was a hastily constructed vessel designed to range ahead of Macharius’ main battlefleet and search the Halo Stars for enemy fleets and new worlds to conquer.

Hawking 1

Hawking 1

Hawking 2

Hawking 2

The Hawking Class is an interesting vessel being a long range scout and reconnaissance ship, ranging far ahead of the main fleet in order to locate the enemy or explore unknown space. Very thematic and cool!  In game, the Hawking is a light cruiser with quite heavy armament. Although heavy, this armament is rather mixed with weapons batteries, torpedoes, and launch bays.

Stats

Stats

In addition to its armaments, the Hawking also comes with a number of special rules. It has Improved Thrusters, which adds +1D6cm when the ship is on All-Ahead-Full special orders, Improved Forward Sensors which add +1 to its Leadership rating, and Navigational Shields which mean it does not suffer a speed reduction when moving through celestial phenomenon or blast markers.

For me the Hawking provide a nice narrative addition to some of my Imperial fleets – especially for the Bait scenario – but also for my collection of defences. In this light, I have painted both neutrally, using a light gray / dark green / gold scheme which sits well with any of my Imperial fleets.

Prow conversion

These Hawkings are made out of two re-cast Dauntlesses I managed to acquire – you can see the pretty shoddy resin casting on alot of the detail but at the price I paid they were still well worth it. Perhaps being out scouting for so long has caused battle damage! I have adding a number of things to the Dauntless base. First, I chopped up an Imperial launch bay section to make it slightly smaller and fitted it underneath the body of the ship in order to represent the post and starboard launch bays. Secondly, I added a number of aerials to the top of the ship and to the prow of the ship (a modelling drill is invaluable!) to represent the Forward Sensors.
