BFG – Blackstone Fortresses!

Blackstone_Fortress

Just another quick post I am afraid – I promise I have some more exciting stuff coming along in the pipework including my first game of 40k in about 9 months, a completely painted Rogue Trader fleet, and  surprise fleet! Ooooh exciting, right?

For now though, I give you my recently painted Blackstone Fortresses – these are great big floating things that the Imperium found and repurposed as space defence structures, having guns and fleet repair modules grafted onto them and forming the lynchpin of the defences of the Gothic sector in which Battlefleet Gothic is set. There are six (so I only need three more right?) which were the focus of Abaddon’s attack on the Gothic sector.

IMG_1068IMG_1066The thing is, while the Imperium may have thought they were just big floating rocks, they were actually a giant superweapon with the power to destroy stars…. Ironic huh? Abaddon eventually captures three of the six Fortresses and tries to withdraw to the Eye of Terror – one is detroyed on the way by the Imperium – while the three left in the Imperium’s hands self-destruct. So six, minus 3 (imperium), minus 1 (detroyed by Imperium) makes 2 left floating about in the Eye of Terror somewhere!

IMG_1066They make for a great centrepoint to narrtive scenarios and can be employed as planetary defences in the core rules too, making them useful models to have in a wider collection. They are also not that rare and pop up on eBay fairly regularly for around £25 each.

bOf course their use is not limited to just the Gothic Sector and they work well as generic space stations or system bases. The two left over even reappear in the timeline, 800 years later, supporting Typhus and his Plaguefleet in the 13th Black Crusade. More about the Gothic War and the Blackstones can either be found in the BFG Rulebook, the Execution Hour / Shadow Point Black Library books, or on Lexicanum.

BFG – Arbites Punisher Class Cruiser, Dauntless, and Enforcer Class Light Cruisers – Part 2

Blanche's Arbites

Blanche’s Arbites

Hi guys

Back to the little Adeptus Arbites series I have going on here, this time to look at the Dauntless and Enforcer Class Light Cruisers that make up the fleet along with the Punisher Class Strike Cruiser detailed earlier. I think the Light Cruiser size fights neatly with the Arbites theme – they are given responsibility for planetary governance, imperial law, trade lanes, and pirate suppression so I think Light Cruisers are alot more appropriate for that kind of work than the big lumbering Navy ships.

2 Enforcer Class Light Cruisers

2 Enforcer Class Light Cruisers

The two Dauntlesses are the worst cast of the ten I bought, with real issues and needing alot of work to make even slightly presentable. However in this day and age needs must and they work ok if you don’t look too closely! On the other hand the Enforcers are made up of a converted recast Dauntless and a transplantation of an Enforcer Class from my Bakka fleet to this one. Both are a very easy conversion just replacing or covering the weapons batteries with launch bays instead.

Enforcer Class

Enforcer Class

The Enforcer Class is another Light Cruiser variant, being a 6DC, 25cm speed, 1 shield, 2 turret, 5+ armour ship. Instead of the usual weapons batteries, it is armed with a launch bay on each side which, unlike the Punisher Class, can launch both bombers and fighters as well as three 30cm forward facing lances. This makes it unable to engage in ship-to-ship duels without weapons batteries to knock down shields, but a very useful support ship in launching attack craft waves and finishing off wounded ships with its lances. Both roles I think are rather fluffy, given that most of the prey of Arbites vessels would be escort sized pirates etc.

I hope everyone has a good bank holiday weekend!

BFG – Arbites Punisher Class Cruiser, Dauntless, and Enforcer Class Light Cruisers – Part 1

Symbol of the Adeptus Arbites

Hey guys

I have recently been reading the Execution Hour and Shadow Point books by Gordon Rennie which are set around the Gothic War and the space battles of Captain Leoten Semper aboard the Dictator Class Cruiser, the Lord Solar Macharius. I may well do a post detailing these books in the near future but the reason I brought them up now is that the Adeptus Arbites play a very central role in the first book in the form of Arbites Marshal Byzantane and the Punisher Class Strike Cruiser Inviolable Retribution.

Punisher Class Strike Cruiser

Punisher Class Strike Cruiser

As any followers of the blog will know, I have a bit of a thing for all of the smaller organisations and institutions of the Imperium that do not commonly make it onto the tabletop – hence my interest in Arbites, Inquisitors, Ad-Mech, Void Whales etc etc. As part of this, and part of recently reading the Gordon Rennie books, I came around to painting up some spare ships I had as a kind of Arbites Strike force.

I had two Enforcer Class Light cruisers, and two horrendously cast Dauntless’s left over from my recast order. Adding to them, I had the spare body of a Space Marine Strike Cruiser which I had converted into looking like the Punisher Strike Cruiser above so it all came together rather well.

Arbites Strike Fleet

Arbites Strike Fleet

Punisher Class

Punisher Class

It is rather strange given how powerful the Punisher Class is, being easily the equal of a full Imperial Cruiser, given its small size. It has a 6 hit frame, 6+ prow, 5+ all-round armour, 1 Shield and 2 turrets. That is pretty standard in relation to a SM Strike Cruiser though a little less armoured. However, it weaponry is rather formidable: FP4 30cm Weapons Batteries on either side, which are unimpressive, but it also has 2 launch bays, and a L/F/R FP4 Bombardment Cannon. If that isn’t enough, it also fires six torpedoes, with a choice of regular torpedoes, melta torpedoes, or barrage bombs (I will cover these in a future post!), receives +2 Ld for enemies on Special Orders, as well as bonuses to to planetary assault and boarding.  not bad for 180pts!

This post is getting a little long, so expect a part 2 detailing the Enforcer Class and the Dauntlesses I have appropriated. I hope everyone is enjoying the recent posts etc and please let me know in the comments if there is anything you want to see covered on here.

Thanks

Gus

BFG – System Ships and Defence Monitor

Hi guys,

I know it has been a while since the last blog post, but I have been busy (and not painting…).

System Ships

System Ships

First up are the last couple of bits and pieces that make up my BFG Defences – some system ships and a GW Defence monitor. Above are the System Ships, tiny little undetailed slivers of metal that have no way of attaching them to any kind of bases. Fluff-wise they are non-warp capable ships, ranging from luxury yachts to armed in-system escort vessels, while in game they are single hit, 5+ armour, 1 shield, 15cm speed, 45 degree turns, 3WB escorts – like a slower, less manoeuvrable, Iconoclast for 20pts.

Defence Monitor 1

Lance Monitor

Lance Monitor

Lance Monitor

Above is one of the GW Specialist Games Defence Monitors that is sold as part of the pack with the System Ships. I am not quite sure how the sides are supposed to look on this model as it does not come with any weapons sprues and looks exceedingly bare without anything on it. Luckily, I had four of the Chaos lance turrets spare and with these stuck on, it looks sufficiently well armed, as they are supposed to be in the fluff. Given it looks significantly different to the FW Defence Monitors here, and given the lance turrets, I am thinking of running it as some kind of Lance Monitor by replacing the FP8 30cm WB with FP2 30cm lances. Obviously this will need my opponents approval, but my gaming group tends to be quite laid back and it works with Smotherman’s.

Group Shot

Last up is a group shot of the recent set of defences I have been painting up – a space station, 3 Endeavours, 3 WB Platforms and the Lance Monitor and System Ships.

BFG – Endeavour Class Light Cruisers – 100th post!

100th post!

WOOP!

———————–

Hi guys,

As some of you may have noticed in the last set of game pictures, I have recently painted up some bits and pieces that have not made thier way onto the blog – System Ships, a Defence Monitor, and three Endeavour class cruisers.

Endeavour Class Light Cruisers

Endeavour Class Light Cruisers

These are obviously not the original GW models which go for a truly crazy amount on eBay due to the very limited nature of thier release, but are instead some proxy models I bought from a certain someone on the internet for a fiver each. The cast were pretty dodgy, but for that price I cannot really complain too much. The colour scheme has been kept nice and simple, but I think the purple and cream has worked particularly well with the gold trim.

Close-up

Close-up

The ships fit into either the Bakka fleet list or the Rogue Trader list, but I think I will probably just use them as part of my hodge-podge of defences for now. I have left the weapons batteries unglued so I can chop and change between Endeavours / Endurances / Defiants as the mood strikes – I just have to find 4 Imperial launch bays and 6 Imperial lance decks somewhere. If anyone has any, please let me know!

BFG System Defence Scenario Game Pics

Hi guys,

A little while ago some buddies and I decided to play a big multi-player game of Battlefleet Gothic, pitting my system defence models and Ben from Forgot My Tea’s Eldar fleet versus Andy from Miniature Miscellany’s Imperial Fleet and Mike’s new Tau fleet. Simple scenario – I set up the defences, then Andy and Mike moved on from one of the short edges of the 8’x4′ board, with Ben’s fleet possibly coming in on the long edges from turn two. Aim of the game was for the Imperial / Tau alliance to drive through the defences and destroy the space station towards the back of the board.

Enough talking, onto the (very blurry) pictures!

BFG – Defence Platforms & Orbital Dock

Just a super quick post as I have been busy over the last couple of days.

I finished painting up one of the packs of Defence Platforms I ordered from FW – just a very basic dark gray, silver and gold scheme. The models are great although the joins between the central spire and the three points are a little fiddly / fragile. In game they are alright – 60cm, FP 6, 1 shield, 2 turrets, 6+ armour – making them pretty rubbish by themselves but when combined they can deliver alot of firepower to a good range.

Just noticed the gold isnt well painted on part of this.... Grr!

The only other thing painted has been one of the Space Station models from Games Workshop, which I am not very happy with. I need to go back and repaint the lance turrets on the sides and on the top as I am less than pleased with the blocky yellow and blue.

Also my friend Ben has picked up working on his BFG fleets too, with a brand new Thousand Sons fleet in the works to go with his EPIC Thousand Sons. Please check it out here.

BFG – Forgeworld Escort Carriers and Defence Monitors

Hi guys,

Sorry it has been a little quiet lately, holidays = more thesis work unfortunately.

Still next up are some more of my recent Forgeworld order (still waiting on some Torpedo platfoms, even after calling and reminding them twice… Not cool FW!).

Mini-fleet of 3 Defence Monitors, 3 Armed Freighters and 3 Escort Carriers

Mini-fleet of 3 Defence Monitors, 3 Armed Freighters and 3 Escort Carriers

First up are the Escort Carriers – merchant ships that have had thier holds removed and replaced with launch bays in a desperate attempt to provide some ordnance. Still given they are reloading ordnance on a Ld5 check (Ld7 for defences, -1 for transports, -1 for being an Escort Carrier) I cannot expect them to ever do anything meaningful except die – and at 60pts a pop they hurt when they die! Still, they are practically the only way to get any launch bays into the Rogue Trader fleet lists so they are pretty much a necessity.

Then we have the Defence Monitors – exceptionally slow (but does that matter when the enemy is coming to you?), very tough, and very heavily armed. I have used these a few times now and have found them to be great assets, even though 60pts again feels quite expensive. Still a squadron of three of them throws out 24WB and 3 Lances to 30cm which is a pretty nasty thing to have to deal with!

I must say that these have been great little models from Forgeworld and have all been pretty well cast with no bubbling or defects – they do work out quite pricey though at £11 for three.

Hope everyone had a good Easter!

Rocks in space!

Just a quick update.

My friend Andy, from Miniature Miscellany, recently bought some BBQ rocks and made them into great BFG asteroids. He very nicely gave a handful to me and I have been converting them into planetary defences / Ork Roks. I have tried to keep them pretty generic so I can use them across my different fleets – Imperial Defences, Chaos Defences or Ork-controlled Roks.

Defences

There are four little rocks which I plan to count as Weapon/Lance/Torpedo platforms, two slightly larger which will be Orbital Docks and 1 big rock which will either be a Space Station or could probably stand in for a small Blackstone Fortress – unfortunately my real Blackstone is missing one of its pieces.

Apologies for the not so good photo too!
