Epic Dark Angels vs. Orks Battle Report

Battle_for_Piscina_IV

Hey guys,

Sorry it has been so long since my last post, things haven’t been great and there has been a lot of change in the amount of free time I have so wargaming has basically died for me.

Still, I recently found a load of pictures from a game I played back last year with a friend of mine in London – an EPIC throwdown between my Dark Angels and his Ork force. This friend basically got me into EPIC and was my first regular opponent so it was great to play him again.

We chose to play the Breakout scenario from the EPIC rulebook for a bit of a change, which involved my Dark Angels being caught in an ambush by the sneaky Orks. I grabbed a few pictures and here they are.

IMG_5418

I always like the look of the mixed Stompa mobs that my friend uses – very characterful little models

IMG_5420

A mix of Battlewagons, Trukks, and various other contraptions stares across at the thin line of Dark Angels

IMG_5422

Whirlwinds – kind of stuck in the middle of the board here, at least their short range was not too problematic

IMG_5423

I decide to drop-pod in some Dreadnought assisted Devastators in order to try and tackle the Ork Gargant…

IMG_5424

For the Emperor!

IMG_5426

Sadly, it didn’t go all that well for the Devastators…

IMG_5427

I also love the little Ork Deffkopta models and they are surprisingly good in game too

IMG_5428

Two units of Deathwing teleport in, bringing ruin to the Stompa Mob.

IMG_5429

The Ravenwing doing their thing – coralling the enemy onto the guns of the Dark Angels

IMG_5430

The 2 Destructor / 2 Annihilator combo on the Predators actually worked well hre for once – the mixed armour formations of the Orks made them vulnerable

IMG_5431

Luckily I managed to keep the Gargant broken and out of threat range, making the best of my escape from the other side of the board. Victory to the Dark Angels!

MWIH – My Week in Hobby 3

Hi again guys,

A relatively slow week for me, just one game in as I had to miss attending my local club last week (and this week) due to work. Still I managed to get some gaming and some painting in nevertheless!

On Saturday I popped round to my friend Ben’s house for a 3k game of EPIC. I had recently bought a new Ork army for Epic so decided to take them out for a spin. The game was very grindy – hordes of Orks versus unkillable Thousand Sons – but in the end I edged out a victory. Some pics:

The game revolved around a series of massive grindy engagements right in the centre of the board pitting the numbers of the Orks against the formidable armour saves of the Thousand Sons.

I have also managed to get some painting in over the course of the week, painting up another formation from my EPIC Dark Angel army. The formation is a Devastator Detachment with a Librarian character upgrade for the FF Macro-Weapon attack.

£100 Armies – The Rest

Well the last few days have been a little crazy, with 5000+ hits on the blog in two days as Specialist Games went under, and some very bad food poisoning at my end.

Prior to hearing the news, I had dug up some more 3000pt Epic lists for less than £100 (£150 buying new), and it seems like a shame to let them go to waste so I am going to pop them all into one blog post and leave them up on the web to serve as decent beginner lists for anyone thinking of starting Epic to come across. Plus, you should be able to pick most of this stuff up on ebay!

Space Marines

Space Marines

TACTICAL DETACHMENT [400] 6 Tacticals, 3 Rhinos, Supreme Commander

TACTICAL DETACHMENT [350] 6 Tacticals, 3 Rhinos, Captain

ASSAULT DETACHMENT [225] 4 Assault units, Chaplain

WHIRLWINDS [300] 4 Whirlwinds

TERMINATOR DETACHMENT [375] 4 Terminators, Captain

TERMINATOR DETACHMENT [325] 4 Terminators

THUNDERHAWK [200]

£67.40 (SM Coy Box, Rhino Box, Characters, Whirlwinds, Terminators, Thunderhawk)

Strong infantry presence, and air assault from Termies or Assault / Devastators in the Thunderhawk, while the Whirlwinds and Tacticals give you good mid-field control. It is a little weak in long ranged firepower, and lacks AA completely.

Eldar

Eldar

ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [600] 8 Dire Avenger, 4 Wave Serpent, Autarch, Exarch

GUARDIAN WARHOST [300] Farseer, 7 Guardians, 3 Wraithguard

WINDRIDER TROUPE [200] 6 Jetbike

RANGER TROUPE [150] 6 Ranger

NIGHTWINGS [300] 3 Nightwing Interceptors

ENGINES OF VAUL TROUPE [250] Void Spinner

GUARDIAN WARHOST [150] Farseer, 4 Guardians, 3 Heavy Weapon Platform

REVENANT TITANS [650] 2 Revenant Titans

GUARDIAN WARHOST [150] Farseer, 4 Guardians, 3 Heavy Weapon Platform

£109.30 (Warhost Box, Nightwings, 2 x void Spinners, Weapon Platforms, Revenants)

Eldar are quite expensive! The Aspects in Wave Serpents are fearsome, as are the Revenants in this size of list, while the Void Spinners and Rangers can effectively hold the backfield. Although the Guardians are quite delicate, once they are in decent area cover they will be decidedly hard to shift off an objective, while providing a little supporting fire. Nightwings give excellent AA and AT power to the list.

SENTINEL SQUADRON [100] 4 Sentinels

ROUGH RIDER PLATOON [150] 6 Rough Riders

£108.40 GW (Infantry Coy, 2 x Chimera, Rough Riders, Sentinels, Hydras, 2 x Thunderbolts)

£35.84 FW (2 x Medusa, 3 x Shadowswords)

Bit of a strange IG list, with a lot of light formations like the Rough Riders and Sentinels. These are needed to counterweight the pricey SHT Company and Mechanized Companies, and to screen them from unwanted attention. The Hydras provide a strong AA component, leaving the Thunderbolts free to be aggressive in targeting enemy formations.

KULT OF SPEED [200] 6 Buggy, 2 Skorcha

FIGHTA SQUADRON [150] 3 Fighta Bomba

£104.30 (Ork Horde, Big Gunz, Soopa Gunz, Landa, 2 x Kult, Deth Koptas, Fighta Bommas)

While the two Big Warbands and Big Gun formations can hold / move onto objectives, the two small Kults and the Deth Coptas give more activations as well as speed to the army. The Landa poses a double threat – an air assault with the Boyz, or just a number of decent strafing runs, while the FB’s should help you attain air superiority so that the Landa doesn’t get shot down!

Titan Legion

WARHOUND TITAN [275] Plasma Blastgun, Vulcan Megabolter

WARHOUND TITAN [275] Vulcan Megabolter, Plasma Blastgun

REAVER TITAN [775] 3 Laser Blaster, Veteran Princeps, Single Weapon System Surcharge

REAVER TITAN [675] 3 Apocalypse Rocket Launcher, Veteran Princeps

REAVER TITAN [850] 3 Laser Blaster, Legate, Carapace Multi-Lasers, Single Weapon System Surcharge

THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150] 2 Thunderbolts

£95.5 (2 x Warhound, Thunderbolts, 3 x Reaver)

Slightly different list, and not one I would recommend for a beginner to Epic. In 3000pts, 3 Reavers are exceptionally scary and I would recommend arming them like the above so they can concentrate on roles rather than not being very efficient. 18 x AT3+ will put a big dent in any formation you are likely to see at this points level, while the Warhounds and Thunderbolts provide speed and long range.

BFG – Orks vs. Imperials Game pics

Just a few quick pictures from a recent game between my friend Tom (no blog, surprisingly…) and I – my newly painted Gothic sector Imperial Fleet versus a combination of his and my Ork fleets. Points were about 1500-ish from what I remember.

Imperial Fleet

Imperial Fleet – this was my first real outing with the Emperor Class Battleship. I think I deployed it a little too far back, as it did not really have much of an impact ont he game.

Turn 2 / 3 - Imperial Nova Cannons had reaped a significant toll on the Ork capital ships, crippling most of them. while torpedoes disrupted the Ork rush for the gap in the asteroid belt.

I felt it was a great game, although some very lucky rolls on my Nova cannons made it  a little one-sided. By the time the Orks arrived at the gap in the asteroid belt they just did not have enough weight to seriously threaten the Imperials, who pushed through the Ork fleet and swung around to threaten their rear.

Overall a good game, and it was fun to be able to up the points value a little bit and have a real fleet engagement.

——————————

Just realised I haven’t actually posted about EPIC Armageddon in almost a month and a half despite the name of the blog! Apologies for this drift, but truthfully I just haven’t been playing all that much epic recently – 3 games in the last 10/12 weeks and two of them were with a completely unpainted Space Marine army, so not very conducive to good blog pics. Hopefully people do not mind the Necromunda and BFG stuff too much, and EPIC should return when I get back to Uni.

Hope everyone is well!

BFG Ork Kill Kroozer and Terror Ship

Quickly painted up another couple of Ork ships.

This brings the fleet up to around 1000pts, with two cruisers and a host of escorts. I have updated the BFG Orkz page too.

BFG – Orkz vs. Eldar

Sorry for the delay in posting up anything new, but I am husbanding the content I have left for the remainder of the summer. Anyways, I have some pictures of a game of Battlefleet Gothic played between my Orkz (for only the second time ever) and Ben’s Eldar. I know Ben likes to complain that he never wins BFG, but he definitely won this game – not helped by a repeat of my complete inabilility to ram anything! Needing to line my ramships up the turn before, giving the eldar a full turns worth of movement and then hoping they have left themselves perfectly lined up was asking a little bit much. Just a 45 degree turn at the beginning of the AAF needed for a ram would be such a godsend!

Still enough whining, onto the pics.

Eldar Nightshades sneak round the back of my ships – This game really showed the difference in maneuverability between the two fleets.

Hit and Run from the Nightshade

One of the useful points of using gravel as asteroid fields!

Ben won this one convincingly, the game ending with the pair of us hiding in the asteroid! I like my Ork fleet, but I certainly think it is the weakest of those I have played with, especially against the fast and maneuverable Eldar!

Orkz in space!

Hi guys (and any girls)

Just an update to let you know that I have finished painting my BFG Ork fleet  – the models are really great and characterful and hide my dodgy paintjobs. The fleet is only a little one, topping out at 700pts and is themed as a diverse band of Ork pirates with a variety of colour schemes but tied together by the dark metallic bodies of the ships and the consistent outlines.

The list is wholly made up of escorts, which I know is hardly competitive, but I think fits with Orks in BFG much more neatly than the more competitive Terror-fleet. Given that I may eventually add a single cruiser to the fleet, just to round it out a little.

Brute Ramships x 4   100

Brute Ramships x 4   100

Ravager Ships x 3    120

Ravager Ships x 3    120

Onslaught ships x 3  105

Savage Ships x 3      90

Anyway, picture time!
