BFG – Forgeworld Escort Carriers and Defence Monitors

Hi guys,

Sorry it has been a little quiet lately, holidays = more thesis work unfortunately.

Still next up are some more of my recent Forgeworld order (still waiting on some Torpedo platfoms, even after calling and reminding them twice… Not cool FW!).

Mini-fleet of 3 Defence Monitors, 3 Armed Freighters and 3 Escort Carriers

Mini-fleet of 3 Defence Monitors, 3 Armed Freighters and 3 Escort Carriers

First up are the Escort Carriers – merchant ships that have had thier holds removed and replaced with launch bays in a desperate attempt to provide some ordnance. Still given they are reloading ordnance on a Ld5 check (Ld7 for defences, -1 for transports, -1 for being an Escort Carrier) I cannot expect them to ever do anything meaningful except die – and at 60pts a pop they hurt when they die! Still, they are practically the only way to get any launch bays into the Rogue Trader fleet lists so they are pretty much a necessity.

Then we have the Defence Monitors – exceptionally slow (but does that matter when the enemy is coming to you?), very tough, and very heavily armed. I have used these a few times now and have found them to be great assets, even though 60pts again feels quite expensive. Still a squadron of three of them throws out 24WB and 3 Lances to 30cm which is a pretty nasty thing to have to deal with!

I must say that these have been great little models from Forgeworld and have all been pretty well cast with no bubbling or defects – they do work out quite pricey though at £11 for three.

Hope everyone had a good Easter!

BFG – Armed Freighters and Ork Fleet Pic

Apologies for how long it has been since the last post, I have been terribly ill, but I return from oblivion with resin goodness for everyone.

First up are some of the Forge World Armed Freighters I have recently been working on:

Armed Freighter

I have gone for a simple dark gray, dark red and cream colour scheme with the odd silver/gold detail picked out. I didn’t want the trasports to be aligned to any particular fleet so tried to go for a restrained general colour, with a little variation of prow colours just to give them a little bit of personality.

I also painted the prows in slightly different chequer-board patterns to try and reinforce this individuality between the ships, without going so far as to have them not fit in together. They are really nice models, although quite expensive at 3 ships for £11 plus P&P, but the casts are excellent.

In other news, I have some pictures of a couple of recent large-ish BFG games to post up recently and have added a fleet picture to the BFG Ork page up above.

BFG – Rogue Trader Fleet

Hi guys,

I have now finished painting up a Rogue Trader fleet for BFG  – I know I blogged about this a while back when the idea was still just germinating in my head here, but the list has changed significantly since then as has the style I went for.

Rogue Trader Fleet

Rogue Trader Fleet

I decided to try and build a Rogue Trader fleet mostly built around the old Spacefleet miniatures as they give a nice pre-heresy / ancient tech feel to the fleet. Also, while they align nicely with the Rogue Trader ships in the 2010 FAQ, there are also rules given for them in Warprift 31 and 32.

So, the fleet now tops out at about 2000pts with a Spacefleet Ironclad standing in as a Murder Class Cruiser with a Targetting Matrix, 4 Spacefleet Gothics as normal Rogue Trader Cruisers with Targetting Matrices, one Goliath Transport Ship as a Heavy Fuel Transport, 8 Spacefleet Cobra Destroyers to be used as any escorts needed, 6 Xenos escorts as well as nine mixed transport ships. As a fleet I think it will throw out a scary amount of firepower in the 30-45cm range band because of the Targetting Matrices (The vessel counts all targets as closing when using the gunnery table within 30cm and ignores right-shift modifiers for shooting greater than 30cm) but is very weak in lances and completely lacks fighter / bomber wings. Much more of a fun / campaign fleet than a competitive one.

BFG – Transports

Yo guys,

Just painted up a couple of transport models from here. Great models that fit really well into the Gothic aesthetic and are well cast. I would recommend them to anyone playing BFG.

The seller also recently started selling some Fuel Transporter models as well.

The Merchant Fleets of Mankind – BFG Rogue Traders?

I have always loved the idea of Rogue Traders – those individuals set loose from the strictures of the Imperium to go explore, make money and generally do whatever the hell they like. Eisenhorn and Ravenor just increased this as well as the very nice Rogue Trader Cruiser model from GW.

Rogue Trader Cruiser – Yours for £12.30

However since getting into BFG, the cost of all of the transport models from either GW or Forgeworld put me off. Everywhere else I looked also worked out pretty pricey for what I wanted, and I kind of dropped the idea. However a couple of weeks ago I snapped up some em4 spacecraft models from a Buy It Now on Ebay, in the expectation that my £3 would be wasted and they would be horrible (Just like the 100 or so Dwarves I got off them when I was first getting into WHFB…).

Scale comparison with Imperial Cruiser

To my surprise, when they arrived they were actually decent. A nicely cast, but slightly bendy gray plastic, set of 12 generic spacecraft in the right scale for BFG and with hex flying stands included – all for only £2.55! This reignited my interest in doing a Rogue Trader fleet for BFG and since then I have been feverishly writing list after list, trying to balance coolness, cost, and playability.

Peasmold Class Recycling Ship from GZG

Buying 2 more packs from em4, the GW Rogue Trader Cruiser, a Dauntless light cruiser gives me a fluffy 1500pt list for less than £30. Not bad! I am also thinking of splashing out £7.50 on the model above from GZG to count as a Heavy Fuel Transport.

The list has ended up being much more fluff than competitive but it should be fun to play against if nothing else:

Veteran Rogue Trader     50

Rogue Trader Cruiser w/ Extra Shield   205

Dauntless Light Cruiser 125

6 x Xenos Escorts         300

6 x Xenos Escorts          300

6 x Armed Freighter     120

6 x Armed Freighter      120

6 x Armed Freighter     120

4 x Cargo Ship                  40

2 x Q-Ship                        120
