Podcasting? – Specialist Games, Podcasting, and the desire for Content

Untitled

Hi guys,

A bit of a different post for today, but something that has bothered me for a while and recently come to a head.

Why are there no Podcasts which cover Specialist Games?

Now, I know that a great many hobby podcasts already exist especially for 40k and Fantasy (I regularly listen to Garagehammer, the Independent Characters, and Jaded Gamercast), and that these very very occasionally have one off episodes covering a particular specialist game, but there is no sustained engagement with Specialist Gaming.

I also know that there are a number of Bloodbowl specific podcasts – which kind of suggests that there would no problem content or audience wise for a podcast focused on Specialist Gaming. Given the fact that GW no longer support our form of hobbying, it seems to me that the communities that we do have become ever more important and I think a podcast would help to bind together the communities that have formed around each game, while also bringing together those disparate communities to allow for the interchange of ideas and inspiration.

Given all this, and the wealth of stuff that the podcast could cover (fluff, proxy models reviews, batreps, campaigns, new rules development, tactics, scenarios, terrain and modelling, expansion books) over so many games (BFG, EPIC, Necromunda, Warmaster, Inquisitor, Mordheim, Gorkamorka, Aeronautica etc), setting up a Specialist Games podcast of some kind is something I want to give alot of thought over the next couple of weeks.

In that vein I would love any input that any blog readers might have on this, and any suggestions!

Thanks,

Gus

I’ve often wondered the same myself. I’ll be subscribing on day 1 if you get this going :)! Maybe start small with 1 episode per month?

    • Gus says:

Yes I definitely would want to walk before running! I was thinking possibly an hour or so a month should be manageable.

    Crack on then.

    • Gus says:

I think I will, reception seems to have been good. Want to get a good handle on what it will require and get a couple of episodes recorded before really putting it out there 🙂

Do you plan on covering all the games or only specific ones? How many hosts were you planning on? Do you want set hosts or a rotating chair? I would say don’t set a limit on how long it should be right now. Record a couple episodes and see how long they are in an organic setting. I can help if you want ad I have some experience and have been playing since Adeptus Titanicus

Well with regards to games I had thought that although the podcast would talk about all the Specialist Games (EPIC, BFG, Warmaster, Necromunda, Aeronautica, Gorkamorka, Inquisitor, Mordheim, Man O’War) it would spend most of its time looking at / talking about those that are still being developed and still have a strong active community – most probably EPIC, BFG, Necromunda, Warmaster, and possibly Inquisitor / Mordheim.

Re: hosts / speakers, for now I think having a fixed host would work best, but involving people who play the games on a regualr basis and trying to get people working on projects of interest to those games communities involved.

I want to get the bare essentials sorted out for now, maybe get one or two tester episodes planned out and done and then start thinking about how to structure it going forward.

I wish you a lot of luck. Mainly because I think it will be a pain to organize everything. If you pull it off it will be amazing.

    • Gus says:

Haha thanks aruki! I am under no illusions that it will be alot of work, hence why i want to take it nice and slow – get a fair bit recorded in advance, try out short episodes first etc etc. 🙂
